Things to Do in Nexton & Summerville, SC: Dining, Parks, Pools & Recreation
One of the first questions people ask me when they're relocating from out of state is simple: "Once we're there — what is there to actually do?" It's a fair question. A house is a house, but you live in a place. The honest answer for Nexton is that a surprising amount of daily life happens without leaving the community, and when you do want a night out or a day trip, historic Summerville and Charleston are right there. Here's the real rundown.
Nexton Square: the walkable town center
Nexton was designed around a mixed-use core called Nexton Square — a pedestrian-friendly town center with outdoor courtyards, planned for more than 40 shops, restaurants and services. This is the part that surprises people coming from a typical subdivision: you can walk or bike to dinner, coffee, a workout or a haircut instead of driving to a strip mall.
On the dining side, Nexton Square has grown into one of the widest restaurant selections in the Summerville area — more than a dozen eateries spanning everything from a high-end steakhouse to tacos, sushi and biscuits. Over time the lineup has included well-known Lowcountry names such as Halls Chophouse, Page's Okra Grill and Poogan's Southern Kitchen, alongside spots like Vicious Biscuit, Taco Boy and Fuji Sushi, plus coffee shops and quick bites for the in-between hours. There's shopping and services too — boutiques, fitness studios, a grocery store, banks, medical and dental offices — so a lot of errands stay close to home.
Honest caveat: specific tenants at any town center come and go, and Nexton Square is still filling in. Treat named restaurants as examples of the vibe rather than a guaranteed current list — always check what's open before you make the drive. What's durable is the concept: a walkable core with a deep, growing mix of places to eat and shop.
The amenities you actually use every week
This is where a master-planned community earns its HOA dues. By the developer's account, a large share of Nexton — roughly a third of the community — is set aside for parks, natural open space and greenways, tied together by amenities spread across the neighborhoods.
The Midtown Clubhouse
Midtown's resort-style clubhouse is the social heart of Nexton. It centers on a meandering lagoon-style pool with lap lanes (and squirt jets and fun zones for the kids), surrounded by sunny and shaded deck space. Around it you'll find lighted pickleball and tennis courts, a fitness room with cardio, circuit and weight equipment, a yoga studio, club rooms, and a work-and-happy-hour-friendly lounge called The Living Room with strong Wi-Fi for remote-work days. Outside there are event and sport lawns that host food trucks, movie nights and neighborhood games, plus a covered pavilion and a play structure.
The Brighton Park Swim Club
Beyond the Midtown lagoon, Brighton Park Village has its own Swim Club built around a 25-meter competition pool, with an interactive splash pad for little ones. Between the two, families rarely have to go far to cool off in a Lowcountry summer.
Trails, disc golf & dog parks
Nexton is laced with a network of paved and natural trails spanning more than 10 miles, so a morning walk, run or bike ride can genuinely feel like an outing. Tucked into Midtown is the Riverstone Park disc golf course — 13 holes of varying lengths, free and beginner-friendly. And yes, there are dog parks: this is a very dog-friendly place to live.
Community events & the social calendar
Part of what makes Nexton feel like a town rather than a subdivision is that things actually happen here. The community runs a regular calendar of gatherings — outdoor concerts on the square, food-truck nights, seasonal festivals, farmers-style markets, fitness classes and holiday events. You don't have to attend any of it, but it's an easy way to meet neighbors, which matters a lot when you're new in town and don't know a soul yet. For families relocating from far away, that built-in social layer is often the difference between a house and a home.
Just up the road: historic downtown Summerville
Nexton sits inside Summerville, nicknamed the "Flower Town in the Pines," and its charming historic downtown is only minutes away. Downtown Summerville is the antidote to anything that feels too new: Hutchinson Square at its center, Azalea Park with its walking paths and springtime blooms, locally owned boutiques and antique shops, a classic soda-fountain pharmacy, coffee shops, breweries and independent restaurants, plus a Saturday-morning farmers market in season. It's the kind of walkable, tree-shaded main street that people picture when they imagine small-town Southern living — and it's right next door.
A little farther: Charleston & the beaches
When you want a bigger day out, some of the South's best is a short drive away. Historic downtown Charleston — the restaurants, King Street shopping, waterfront, history and culture — is roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from Nexton depending on traffic. The beaches at Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach are a bit farther but very doable as day trips. Golfers, boaters and history buffs all have plenty within an hour. The point of living in Nexton isn't that it replaces Charleston — it's that you get quieter, more affordable, more spacious everyday life and keep the region's big attractions within easy reach. The honest take
No community is a theme park, and I won't pretend Nexton is one. Some amenities are still being built out as the community grows, and how much you use them depends on your stage of life. But for most families I work with — especially those relocating from out of state — the combination is hard to beat: walkable dining and everyday errands, resort-style pools and courts, miles of trails, a real events calendar, a storybook historic town next door, and Charleston within reach. That's a full life without a long drive attached to every part of it.
