Hospitals & Healthcare Near Nexton, Summerville SC

"How far is the nearest hospital?" and "Are there good doctors nearby?" come up on almost every relocation call — especially from families with young kids and from buyers looking at the 55+ neighborhoods. It's a fair question, and Nexton happens to have a genuinely good answer. Here's an honest, plain-English rundown of the hospitals, ERs and clinics near Nexton, plus the major medical campus being built right in the community.

One of the quieter advantages of moving to Nexton is that it sits in one of the fastest-growing parts of the Charleston region, and healthcare has grown right alongside it. You're not choosing between a nice community and access to care — the nearest full-service hospital with a 24-hour emergency room is only a few miles away, a couple of the region's big hospital systems are within a short drive, and a major new medical campus is rising inside Nexton itself over the next few years.

An honest note up front: I'm a real estate agent, not a medical professional, and I don't rate doctors or hospitals. Everything below is general orientation for people relocating here — verify current services, hours, wait times, insurance networks and provider quality directly with each facility and your own insurer before you rely on any of it.

The short answer

The closest hospital to Nexton is Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital, a full-service hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, only a few miles away in the same 29486 area. Beyond it, HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital (part of the Trident Health system) is a short drive toward town, the larger Trident Medical Center anchors North Charleston, and MUSC Health — the region's academic medical system — already runs a clinic in Nexton and is building a full hospital campus here. For most everyday needs there's also urgent care and virtual care within minutes.

Hospitals near Nexton

Closest · full-service ER

Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital

At 100 Callen Blvd, Summerville (in the same 29486 zip as Nexton), this is the hospital most Nexton residents are nearest to — roughly a few miles away. It opened in 2019 as Berkeley County's first full-service hospital in decades and has grown fast: a major expansion completed in 2026 doubled its inpatient capacity to about 100 beds, more than doubled the emergency department, and added a labor & delivery unit with a perinatal center, a heart & vascular center, and expanded imaging and surgery. It runs a 24-hour emergency room and has repeatedly earned an "A" hospital-safety grade from The Leapfrog Group. For a family weighing "where would we go in an emergency," this is usually the answer, and having labor & delivery this close matters to a lot of younger buyers.

Short drive · family hospital

HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital

On Midland Parkway in Summerville (part of the Trident Health / HCA system), this is a long-established acute-care hospital — around 174 beds — that has served the Summerville, Dorchester and Berkeley area for roughly three decades. It has a 24-hour ER, including a dedicated pediatric ER area, plus a broad range of surgical and medical services. It's a bit farther from Nexton than the Berkeley hospital but still a short, familiar drive for many residents, and it gives you a second full hospital option from a different health system.

Regional anchor

Trident Medical Center

Trident Medical Center in North Charleston is the larger flagship of the Trident Health system, offering a wider set of specialty and higher-acuity services. It's farther out than the two Summerville-area hospitals — a normal commute rather than a run-around-the-corner trip — but it's the kind of regional hospital you'd be referred to for more specialized care, and it's an easy reference point off the I-26 corridor.

Academic medical system

MUSC Health (Charleston)

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) anchors the region's academic medicine in downtown Charleston — its main medical center and children's hospital are the go-to for the most specialized and advanced care in the Lowcountry, roughly 25 to 35 minutes down I-26 depending on your exact address and traffic. Most people never need to make that drive routinely, but it's reassuring to know a major teaching hospital is within reach — and, as below, MUSC is bringing a lot of that care much closer to Nexton.

A major medical campus is being built inside Nexton

This is the part that surprises people. MUSC Health is investing heavily in Nexton itself, so healthcare access here is set to get dramatically better over the next few years — not decades away, but on a near-term timeline:

Dates and details on projects still under construction can shift, so treat these as planned timelines rather than promises — but the direction is clear: Nexton is becoming a genuine healthcare hub, not just a bedroom community.

Urgent care, primary care & everyday needs

Not everything is an emergency, and Nexton is well covered for the ordinary stuff too. Between MUSC's Nexton Medical Park, the Roper and Trident/HCA networks, and independent practices along the Nexton Parkway and Highway 17-A corridors, you'll find primary-care physicians, pediatricians, dentists, eye care, physical therapy, imaging and lab-draw locations, and walk-in urgent care within a short drive — plus 24/7 virtual urgent care options for minor issues like a sinus infection or UTI. Pharmacies are easy: there are grocery and standalone pharmacies at Nexton Square and the nearby marketplaces.

Why this matters more for some buyers

Healthcare access is a bigger deal for some moves than others, and it's worth being honest about who should weigh it most:

Distances above are approximate and services change as facilities open and expand. Always confirm current hours, emergency services, provider quality and — importantly — whether a hospital or practice is in your insurance network before you count on it. I'm happy to point you to the right official sources for any specific address.

Put it all together

For a community its size, Nexton is unusually well positioned on healthcare: the nearest full-service ER is only minutes away, two hospital systems serve the area, and MUSC is building a cancer center, a specialty pavilion and a full hospital right inside the community over the next few years. It's one more reason the area keeps drawing families and retirees alike. Pair this with the full community guide, the neighborhoods guide and the schools guide to see the whole picture of daily life here.
